There was a time when we couldn’t live with Lynn. We’d be outmuscled and outthought by a team stuffed with muscular long termers and local men. They have neither of those now so not a total surprise they look slightly less formidable. We drew 2-2 there on the opening day of last season and should have beaten them at home both this season and last. Close .. but not three points. Hereford FC have not beaten the Linnets in ten goes. The last victory by any Edgar Street club over Lynn was the FA Cup in 1971. I was there. Were you?

The Norfolk crew lie 4th in the League with the 4th best home record of 8-4-3. They do struggle against bottom six sides (as do the Bulls). Home draws with Radcliffe, Needham Market and a shocking midweek defeat by Farsley Celtic. While Peterborough Sports, led by their former striker Gash, beat them both home and away. Conversely, they’ve beaten 4 of the top 6.

Lynn has “names” throughout a generous sized squad, a mature one too with an average age of nearly 27. Pushing up the figure is 38-year-old goalkeeper Paul Jones who has thwarted us mightily in recent years. Their goal threat is mainly from second-time-around Gold Omatayo or Johnny Margetts. Omatayo is a wandering Swiss citizen, who’s been more out than in over his career. He has 5 goals in 23 appearances. Margetts, not tall but well built has 9 in 19 appearances. Full time football at 31 lured him away from Matlock for what is his 20th move. The Linnets have recently lined up in a 5-4-1 formation with their midfielders all expected to play anywhere across the middle or up front. The club boasts two U19 sides and an U23 team.

Owner Stephen Cleeve continues to pump money into Lynn, reckoning the club needs a million pounds per season to operate. With an average attendance of 988, you do the maths.

All Lynn games are segregated with 150 main stand seats and an unlikely 985 terrace spaces. Prices are highest in the league. Seats are £21/£19 and terracing £2 less all round. This is a rather too familiar venue and the scene of too many defeats over the years. Part of the admission is repayment of a loan the Linnets were compelled to take during covid. Good of us to donate.

Our away record is solid and we have a decent record against the better opponents so grabbing a positive result isn’t unrealistic.  Says he, eyes closed and fingers crossed.
