Jason Cowley’s injury combined with the abrupt departure of Montel Gibson have decimated our attacking options. Gaffer No 2 Adam Rooney has filled in with some aplomb. He was chosen as Man of the Match in his first two games. Roons is 36 with important managerial commitments so really cannot continue longer term to lead the line. Hence the arrival of Ty Joseph Michael Deacon, a carpenter by trade, on a short-term deal from the Lambs. I suppose we have to be polite about Tamworth for a while now?

It’s damn hard to replace a goal scorer once the season is underway. Everyone wants them hence they are tied into contracts. In his last interview, Paul Caddis talked about looking in Step Three for talent. I did wonder who he had in mind as I’ve seen a few Step 3 games this term and pickings are very few. Some second hand goods around like Ethan Freemantle, Reece Styche, Jamie Molyneux or even Ty Barnett.

We know now that the solution came from a Step One outfit which sounds better. He has scored fairly regularly at step 3 and 4, but he has struggled to find the net in National League North. Tamworth have simply had better players in his position who are finding the net.

Club Career

Prior to joining the Lambs, then a Step 3 club, Ty played for Aylesbury (3 spells – not too surprising as he lived there), Leighton Town, Kempton Rovers, Wilmslow, Buckingham and Rushden & Diamonds. By 2021, he’d made 200 senior appearances. In the years since, he’s added around 80 more games, however, he hasn’t scored this year.

This summer, the Tamworth manager Andy Peaks offered these words “Ty is a great lad and really committed to the club and wants to give Step One a go. I have invited him back and we’ll see how he gets on. He has had offers far higher than I can pay him but he wants to have the opportunity.”

Tamworth fans were universally surprised as they liked him as “the big man” but did wonder whether the level was too high for him. Deacon may have been better advised to take one of the lucrative offers. I quite wonder who they were from? Dan Creaney is the Lambs’ main forward, and new arrival Miracle Okafor is trusted to fill in.

Despite all that background information strikers can offer more than just the narrow measure of finding the net. There’s occupying the defence to make room for others, and assisting others to score. It is understood Ty is a maximum effort performer when he’s match fit. Hereford FC need a competent performer to take the pressure off others and Ty is arguably the best option at the present time.
