A couple of months back, during a ten-match unbeaten run, the Welsh pitch playing Chester went top. Clear top. Like ourselves, the Seals are long term residents of this Division and they dared to dream. Now they are fourth and missing departed striker Charlie Caton. They’re under the pressure spotlight and consequently, recent results have been average. The last 7 games earned them 9 points (compare to our 10). There’s recent evidence that although they can beat strugglers, they can no longer overcome top 8 sides.
Current most prolific marksman is Tom Peers with a decent 16 goals (enough to ensure he is promoted even if his team are not.). Expect an extra-large coach to accommodate his grey female horse. We must also be aware that home grown central defender Harrison Burke has 10 goals. Ten! Combine every Hereford defender used this season and they couldn’t equal that tally. Our opponents have a very similar income to ourselves yet manage to accommodate a hybrid system with 3 sessions per week. I’d speculate that extra session gives them more time to work on set plays, hence Burke’s double figures.
Chester are in play-off limbo. Top spot is way beyond them. They do still have a reasonable margin over the club in eighth. There’s some wriggle room around their qualifying as long as they continue to secure some points. They’d surely take a draw at the Street now if it was offered. We don’t have that luxury with several clubs, their fetid breath right upon our necks, anxious to take our place.
Our team must find a way to win in front of big support just to reach the play-offs. Not sure why this is so often a problem over the last 3 years. Perhaps a day to make more use of our veteran players? History (5 wins each) and a very similar goals scored and conceded tally all point to a close 90 minutes. It’s an afternoon to be patient. Kieran Coates could start against his old club. With EID celebrated last Sunday, Ceesay can now eat without restriction and hopefully play the same way. With two wins behind us, dare we imagine a confident Bulls side playing front foot fast moving football on the ground?
